I have always loved arts and crafts. When the opportunity presented itself to have craft classes on the ship, a smile so broad covered my face! It was like heaven. I could entertain, teach hula and crafts! Wow! There were so many things to do! Soon I learned that it was impossible to do many of the crafts in the 45 minute time slot. So, it meant I had to become more and more creative. Which I did.
This section is dedicated to the crafts I could not do on the ship due to time. There are many different style of lei (in the Hawaiian language, you cannot just add a "S" to make it plural") that require hours to complete. Some of them are very intricate. I would like to offer those to you here.
As time goes on, there will be many other crafts as well.
Give or get Lei'd?
Hawaiians and Hawaiians at Heart love to get llei'd and love to lei others any time, any place, anywhere. The making of a lei and gifting it to someone is a deep form of love, friendship and affection. Lei are worn for many occasions. A lei can symbolize never ending love in a wedding ceremony. It can symbolize a congratulations at a birth, anniversary or graduation. Even sports fans are wearing them signify their support. A lei is proper for any occasion!
The wonders of the lei are many. The beauty in itself is the first thing we think of, but the caring that went into making it is significant (especially for Hawaiians) because it meant someone took the time to gather the materials and make a gift of such beauty. When you see someone wearing one, your eye automatically goes to the lei, then your eyes will slowly look up to be greeted by a smile. You can't help but smile when you where a lei! Oh! and it is customary when giving or receiving a lei, that you don't lei yourself. When you give or get lei'd it is always accompanied by a hug and a kiss. Life doesn't get much better than that!
Let's get together and Make Stuff!
If you crafted with us on a cruise ship, you know how much fun it can be. Besides making something we could use, wear or gift, it was just nice being together. Just because we have to say "safe" at home right now doesn't me we can't be together! It may not be on a ship, but we can be in the same space and make something nice.
I will be adding crafts as time goes on and we will get together on ZOOM.
